Janita & Michael Waldt – Young, Waldt & Free: A Highland Ridge Pathfinder Embracing the RV Lifestyle

RVing – It’s a Way of Life

The Waldt’s found their inspiration to get into full-time RVing, online. They never knew that was an option until they saw similar families out there making it happen! When Janita and Michael remembered their own childhoods, and how much fun they had outside before technology and social media, they decided it was a perfect opportunity to give their children what they grew up having.

6 months of RVing and a Thousand Trails membership lead to the Waldt’s connecting even more in the RV community with other fulltime families.

A lot of people wonder where you start or what life must have looked like for you before committing to full-time, packing up and hitting the road. The Waldt’s had a normal life before their RV journey. They were homeowners, Michael worked at a solar company and Janita was a stay at home mom. People thought they were crazy for giving it all up to live in an RV.

Life is Short and the Future is Unknown

RVing allows you to be more intentional about spending time together as a family. When you live in a home, you often spend significant amounts of time away from your family due to being in respective rooms. Switching to RVing is such a smaller space that naturally brings your family together.

Find a style that is beneficial to you and your family for added stability and structure in your travels. The Waldt’s oldest son is in virtual school, so they try not to spend as much time in the car or on the road when he has class. Keeping the travel times short and the stays longer makes this lifestyle easier for everyone. Also, after a long day out exploring it can really make the little ones pretty tired, so it’s nice to have some rest days in between and know you still have plenty of time to explore.

Build Trips Around What You LOVE!

The first trip that the Waldt’s took was to Nashville, TN for the CMA fest and it was filled with exciting new talent and star performers on several stages throughout the city. They loved exploring the city while also learning about the history of Nashville with their kids. They’ve also stayed at a Harvest Host in Iowa located on an alpaca farm! They were able to first-hand witness the day-to-day life of someone living on a farm and raising animals to support themselves and their families. The kids enjoyed petting the animals and learning all about the life of an alpaca.

Their family is very big into sports and they also love music. They often take trips that allow them to attend a concert or music festival by some of our favorite artists.  They are also big into baseball and currently have a family bucket list to visit every MLB Stadium. They are at 13 out of the 30!

Up next, they hope to visit the west coast – the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park and eventually Alaska. Their car singalongs are always the best. They love to have song battles and see who can play the best throwback hits. Being from the south they also enjoy gas station stops at Racetrack for boiled peanuts and slushies.

Find What Works Best for You

Everyone has their own method when sorting through their next RV adventure. For the Waldt family, they tend to plan where they will stay in regards to location, but exploring they like to keep spontaneous once they get there. The night before, they will look at activities for the next day based on popular places and attractions of the location they chose.

Planning ahead is made easy with things such as Thousand Trails and Harvest Host memberships! You can even earn new magnets for your fridge that tell a story of where you’ve been.

On a typical journey after arriving at a new location, the first thing they do is set up their campsite and make it feel like home. After that’s complete, they always take a walk around the campground where they will be staying and get acclimated with where everything is located. That’s a perfect chance to check the calendar of events for the site and make plans to attend anything that interests you. After a long travel day, they sit down to discuss plans for the upcoming week and where they would like to visit while at that destination. The next day is usually spent getting more settled in so the remainder of the trip can be spent having fun and exploring a new destination.

RVing’s Biggest Perk

An unexpected benefit of RV life for everyone, including the Waldt’s, is the community that comes with RVing. They have felt so welcomed by their fellow RVers and have already met lifelong friends.

“Take the leap! Life is short and it will always seem like it’s never the right time. The truth is, if you keep waiting for the right time, then it will eventually pass you by and it may be something that you come to regret later in life. If you are able to do it, then just go for it, and you might find that it’s the best decision you ever make!”
